Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians. This work has gained a monumental status, becoming a perpetual reminder of the tragedies of war, an anti-war symbol, and an embodiment of peace. On completion Guernica was displayed around the world in a brief tour, becoming famous and widely acclaimed. This tour helped bring the Spanish Civil War to the world's attention.
Guernica is the theme of the event where artists will create from this history but put it into the context of today. The artists will be dressed in black white and grey garb inspired by the Picasso Painting and creating a new work to the theme of "Guernica".
"Grisaille, indeed a limited medium, provides a rigorous test of talent. Stripped of color, deprived of any sensuous charm, the art of painting appears in its nakedness. It is reduced to the subject the composition, the authority of the brushstroke, and the style." Dominique de Menil
The following artists will be working on their own Large scale canvas in Gray Scale(Grisaille) with out reference and be allotted 3 hours to give the visitors of ArtExpo their unique artistic take on ArtBattles Guernica. Because in ArtBattles there can only be one in the end we invite the viewers to come to the ArtBattles Booth courtesy of the Solo Foundation to endorse the artist that they believe best . The ArtBattles Booth will feature work produced in ArtBattles in 2009 as well as a Live Art Wall curated by New York artist/curator Lexi Bella featuring some of the most noteworthy "live artist" in NYC today. Please come visit us at our booth to see the art from the battles and the new pieces we have for sale.
